The Blackberry Forums have a series of leaked photos of the upcoming Blackberry 8703e that will be carried by Verizon Wireless. They’re saying it should be out by Aug 28. The rumor is that the new Blackberry will support CDMA and EV-DO but not GSM/EDGE.
EV-DO stands for Evolution Data Only - it’s a wireless broadband (high speed) data protocol adopted for use with CDMA wireless networks.
So, if you’re using a CDMA wireless network and want high speed, EV-DO is your thing. If you’re using GSM (competitor to CDMA) and most of the world uses GSM you’re out of luck – or range.
It was rumored on the Blackberry board that Verizon’s ‘berry 8703e was going to be a CDMA/GSM combo which would make it a highly sought-after device, practically a universal Smartphone. But it’s not to be this time. There are rumors of a GSM/CDMA combo player coming up this winter from RIM.
