Best Buy Converting Fanboys?

Fanboy conversion is a tricky process.  Usually the affected party has gone down a long road of addiction to one particular drug (or console), and has become hopelessly attached to that regular fix.  After a period of engrossing affection with one console, it can be very difficult to convert a fanboy to another system.

However, according to gaming site Punchjump, Best Buy is attempting to do just that.  With the number of Sony Playstation 3 consoles only trickling into retailers, Best Buy will allegedly be offering disappointed PS3 fans a free Xbox 360 game with the purchase of Microsoft's console, instead.  It makes some sense considering the number of desperate and disenchanted Sony fanboys (packing big bills) that will be milling around electronics stores this weekend.

A Fanboy Study (our take)

A fanboy is an owner of one particular system who is, by all indication, ready to give his (or in some cases her) life in defending that console.  Generally, there are three kinds of fanboy (exceptions apply):

  • Sony fanboy
    • Generally between 10 and 20 years of age
    • Sports game fanatic, with some interest in shooters
    • Secret affection for platformers, like Jak and Daxter
    • Generally between 20 and 40 years of age
    • Shooter nut, also likes to get behind the wheel of a sim driver
    • Secret affection for the polygonal hotties in Xtreme Beach Volleyball
  • Nintendo fanboy
    • Generally between 5 and 15 years of age
    • Party gamer, loves easy-to-learn multiplayer games (on one screen)
    • Secret affection for Mario's lady-friend, Princess Peach

Best Buy's (alleged) Weird Science

The deal goes something like this.  For the three days including and after the PS3 launch (November 17 to 19), gamers who buy the Xbox 360 console and two games (no matter the price) will be eligible for a third at no charge.

The important thing to remember here is that this is only a report from one remote gaming site.  Best Buy employees who have been contacted on the matter reported nothing of the sort (although most of them are less informed than you or me).

If true, it could mean two things:

Microsoft loves Best Buy

Best Buy loves Microsoft

"Sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S…"

UPDATE: Although an inside source revealed that there's no cemented plan to offer a free third game to Xbox 360 buyers, the company is stockpiling Microsoft's console and rumors are that a major sale may be in the works.

Maybe I'm missing something but that really doesn't make sense to me. If you are showing up on opening weekend to buy a PS3 you are likely:
a) a hardcore PS3 fanboy who has been waiting years for the PS3 and you spit on the Xbox360
b) a hardcore video game fanboy who has probably owned an Xbox360 since its launch
c) looking to make some cash on Ebay

If Best Buy is looking to drive sales it would seem a better plan to offer some kind of deal on the Wii. If Microsoft is taking aim on the PS3 launch day I'd think they wouldn't limit their promotion to just 1 chain.

I guess the real question is, who is willing to admit they are showing up on Opening day? I know a number of people I would classify as Fanboys and nobody seems to be fessing up to an Opening Day camp-out.
