Fitness Guru Blames Computers / PS3 for Child Obesity

FitnessGear101.com is a growing fitness community run by personal trainer and blogger, Anna. It gives fair advice on everything from jogging outdoors to grunting in the gym. But now the fitness help site has taken a confrontational swipe at gadget heads...

A recent article on Anna’s blog blames this winter’s hot Christmas gifts like PS3 for a rise in child obesity. Maybe she purposely left out this year’s equally hot gadget, Nintendo’s Wii, because Wii’s motion sensitive controller will have video gamers shaking and burning calories like bugs under a magnifying glass.

Has FitnessGear101.com Become Tired?

The same article characterizes online shoppers, gamers or anyone who works “hunched over a computer” as pale-skinned, basement dwelling vermin who need to get off their butts, and, as she suggests, go shopping of all things.

In her blog Anna also has the audacity to suggest that the number of online shoppers will escalate “higher than Santa’s reindeer”. But, that’s simply ridiculous! Everybody knows Santa’s reindeer are magic, therefore can fly higher than anything they choose. Get a clue Anna, you just can’t do better than magic.

The PS3 causes childhood obesity?! We got to stop it NOW!!! I mean it has been out for a little over a week and it has already caused this, we got to stop it before it starts killing people! At this rate, you should hear PS3s killing children in mass by Christmas!

It's more hype. Sure, lazy kids that get obsessed get obese from eating and playing too much.

Well Anna and Wayde, perhaps there is common ground to be found in the fact we all agree on everything in moderation - neither video games nor computer-hunching will cause you (or your kids) to become obese, nor will hitting the mall prevent it.  And each of those are enjoyable in small doses, it's the extremes that really cause the problems.

But if you're really concerned about your kids, then pry them away from their video games, and yourself away from the computer - and head outdooors instead of the mall!  This time of year, the less time spent there the better.

I'm totally obsessed with Dance Dance Revolution! This game totally rocks and it's a killer workout. I used to be really addicted to Pong, but I got really tired of watching the ball go back and forth. About all I got from that was a neck cramp. So I walked into an arcade one day, and there it was my DDR salvation. I used to be really soft and jiggly, but now I DDR at home, I DDR with  friends, and I DDR to my favorite tunes. Take it from a DDR freak Anna, you've never had a workout as hard as this!
I'll take you on anytime honey! Let's just see what kind of personal trainer you really are!
