In the wake of recent reports that the Wii-mote is injuring people and smashing their living room possessions, news that Nintendo is releasing more titles for its Virtual Console (which doesn’t use the motion sensor controller) is both welcome and calming.
Nintendo’s Virtual Console is a big draw for older gamers. That’s because the scheduled lineup of games includes hits from Nintendo’s previous systems, including the NES, SNES, and N64. However, the one-time bitter competition has also been thrown in, including games from the days of Turbo Grafx 16 and even Sega Genesis. Clearly, Virtual Console is Nintendo’s answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade, which features some equally impressive hits from yesteryear (including Street Fighter II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and DOOM).

New releases for Nintendo’s Virtual Console include the arcade and Genesis hit Golden Axe, as well as Sega’s cult favorite Ecco the Dolphin. Golden Axe was released with a few sequels, although Nintendo has focused on the 1989 original, which featured three exciting characters, including the warrior in his blue loin cloth, the dwarf with the oversized axe, and the sexy amazon, who slashed her way into all of our hearts.
Breaking News: We’re happy to report that Nintendo may also be working on a Virtual Console release of the ultra-popular GoldenEye, originally brought to the N64. Long before Halo, GoldenEye showed PC gamers they weren’t the only ones who could enjoy an excellent first person shooter.

Unfortunately, not everything is set in stone for GoldenEye’s release. That’s because Microsoft currently owns the game’s original makers, Rare, and could definitely act as a road block for Nintendo.
