Terrestrial Digital Media Broadcasting services can help drivers avoid traffic jams even if they don’t have a built in navigation system. Samsung’s New SPH-B5800 includes the TPEG or Transport Protocol Experts Group, it’s a service that provides real-time transportation information. It’s based on a terrestrial DMB (Digital Media Broadcast) and this is the fist time the services have been made available on a Cell Phone.
Traffic info from TPEG is updated every five minutes and can provide info on local restaurants from various DMB channels. Navigation headaches should be cleared up because the channel lineup on the SPH-B5800 can be viewed while simultaneously watching DMB programming.
B5800 is a thin 16.3 mm slide out Cell Phone, touch sensors are used for easy menu operation. The phone has a 2 megapixel camera built in that allows you to save picture slides as videos using a unique Photo Movie Maker feature.
Before you get too excited about and looking for this phone from your local service provider, it’s only going to be released in Korea so far. But it’s a CDMA 2000 1X EVDO phone that plays back MP3s and also has a built in electronic dictionary and audio book viewer. They get all the cool phones on the other side of the ocean, so unless you plan on finding yours unlocked you’ll have to wait awhile to see it on this continent. The price will be $600 US.
