Wii, PS3 Outsold by Xbox 360 in USA

It isn't overly surprising that Microsoft's year-old Xbox 360 outsold the Sony PlayStation 3.  The latter has trickled into retail stores, a fact that has converted many players from allegiance to Solid Snake to Marcus Phenix.  However, more surprising is the fact that the 360 outsold the intensely popular Nintendo Wii, which has received rave reviews for its use of motion sensor technology.

The numbers are a bit skewed, however, since they're limited to the American market.  That tosses out Wii-frantic Europe and a Japanese population that has no use for Bill Gates' little console.  There, you can expect numbers will greatly favor the other two consoles.

But in the great United States of America, apparently residents are favoring home cookin'.  Between the beginning of November and Santa's arrival in the wee morning hours of Christmas Day, the Xbox 360 shipped some 2 million times, with the Nintendo Wii a close second at 1.8 million.  The ghostly PlayStation 3 – which only seemed to haunt retail shelves here and there – sold just 750,000 units over the same period.

The success of the Xbox 360 could be the result of a few factors, from obvious availability to an impressive selection of games.  Three words: Gears…of…War.

Gears of War on sale at Gizmo Shop!  Just $51.99!

first off, my name being video gamer means i play video games, i never said i had NO life and just devote my entire time awoke to playing video games (notice, my name isnt HARDCORE video gamer DE DE DEEEEE).

and i know nothinc about halo? i had halo and halo2 for pc, and only reason for halo2 pc is for the multiplayer, single player halo is the same thing over and over, there's no replay value.

and xbox doesnt kick wii's ass, over 7 millions wiis sold worldwide according to aprils figures with xbox only at 5 mill and what? xbox got a year headstart? thats sad.  you cant find any 360s because they all are back at warehouses being fixed ahaha

i'm not biased, i'm just not stupid, i'll buy ps3 when its got great games and doesnt cost 600 bucks, and i'll ONLY buy a 360 for the multiplay online, but, i dont have the time to devote to that because i have college/work to deal with at the moment, when i graduate i probably will buy one

Posted by VIDEO GAMER SUCKS on May 31,2007 at 5:35 PM

So Video Gamer you're not a hardcore gamer ("not everyone in the world can sit down for hours on end to just play games, record tv shows, chat online all day long like hardcore gamers can") even though your name is VIDEO GAMER.

Your a Dee DE DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

xbox kicks Wii's ass. There are a crapload of wii's in my are. I could get one for aall of you but there are no xbox 360's because they are the best console.

"The launch of the 120 GB Elite 360 in May will send 360 sales over the Wii again, topped by a huge boost to 360 sales by the Halo 3 launch at the and of the year, when the 360 blows the Wii out of the water."

okay, so who is going to buy the elite?? new customers?? or is it that the people who have the premium version now will trade theirs in for discount on elite and buy elite?? ahahah, so the numbers wont change, same amount of ppl will now have elite that had premium, so microsoft is basically screwing you over, open your eyes

as for halo3, w/e you can have that silly game, its just halo in the end, same old repetitive nonsense, if you played halo1, then you've played them all, what is the catch of halo3? better graphics?? ahha its the same game with same objectives fighting the same style against the same enemies...while your playing your halo1part3 and thinking those sales are doing good, take a look at metroid prime3 for wii, will have same amount of sales, then look at mario galaxy, will have same amount of sales and then look at Brawl, which will just destroy the sales, and thats only this year, not accounting for project hammer, battionwars, etc.

so yea the wii may rub off in like 3 years in the US, but until then, the wii is just going to dominate worldwide until ps3 can find a way (if they can) to be like ps2 and take the gaming world buy storm again, xbox stands no chance worldwide, their numbers in the rest of the world except for usa or just horrendous, you couldnt pay someone in japan to get a 360, xbox is strictly a usa only console because only here will people actually see what it can do, yea its a great system and has great games and the online features rock, but in the end, more people just wanna play games, not everyone in the world can sit down for hours on end to just play games, record tv shows, chat online all day long like hardcore gamers can

Wrong on both counts. TE Wii has never outsold the 360 and PS3 combined ever.

On the other hand, the 360 outsold the Wii and ps3 combined in December, and up to today, the 360  has outsold the Wii since the Wii was launched in December, by approx 300,000.

The launch of the 120 GB Elite 360 in May will send 360 sales over the Wii again, topped by a huge boost to 360 sales by the Halo 3 launch at the and of the year, when the 360 blows the Wii out of the water.

All this with wii shortages and Shipment problems. If thier were more wiis it would have been way better.
Oh did i forgot to mention the Ds has sold 4 times amounts the Xbox 360 has?

Ds>Xbox360+Xbox now thats some crazy ***
What can we say for March? Wii outselfs Xbox 360 twice as much?
April?
May?
end of this year Wii is the best selling console

My predictions for the future

Ds>Wii+Xbox360+Ps3
Went a system sells for half a million each month in a country is crazy
"selling 10 million units in 20 months in japan "
"In the united states every 60 seconds a ds is sold"

OMG, are some of the people here on crack?

The people saying xbox360's didn't sell should have seen the Bestbuy's on boxing day...every other person had an xbox 360.  Xbox 360's are completely sold out here...(WII totoally helped drive people to MS)

The brain surgeons at Sony when seeing their 20 gig overpriced PS/3 at $599 weren't selling decided to price it $100 higher at $699 and put a 60 gig hdd in it.  60 gigs for what?  Game saves?  What content? :p  And what the hell do people need a blu-ray dvd for anyways?  There's like nothing that even comes CLOSE to filling a blu-ray disc.  What's that crashing sound...oh yeah, Sony execs throwing themselves out of windows because of their already in trouble company.  Both the disco'd 20 gig and the new 60 gig models are eating dust on the shelf EVERYWHERE...

The guy who's saying he's waiting to see what happens between the three consoles before he buys...wtf buddy..i've been playing the hell out of my 360 for a year and a half now.(its paid for itself like 10 times)

I got a wii...and the gameplay is nice...Boxing controls are not nearly accurate to real punching during highspeed flurries...but staying power against Lost Planet?  PLEASE...you have got to be kidding me.

PS> If you can't outsell a year and a half old product during your launch when all your craptacular blind fanboi's fight each other for your product...when ARE you going to outsell them?

P.P.S> Anyone who buys their poor child a down generation console (ps2/gamecube) should be shot for setting their kids up for the beatings by the kids at school who's parents actually love them.

Well this is bad news for Sony and PS3. First Assassin's Creed and Grand Theft Auto IV are going to Xbox 360. Here's a link. And so is Virtua Fighter 5. And a rumor saying that kingdom hearts 3 will go to the Wii. Can you say ouch. Sony is with there Blu-Ray anyways. And there where a crop load of PS3's at my local Walmart and none of them got sold don't even clear the shelves. But today I saw the manager of that Walmart have all the PS3 off the shelves and so where all the X3 Blu-Ray disk. A do to this Walmart being small I asked the manager what was going on and she said that Sony wanted them all back and that's all she knows. And that's all I know. Sorry.
Posted by GameBoy on January 12,2007 at 10:14 PM
PS3 just got out of the door, it hasn't start running yet.  The reason you see PS3 popup here and there is because they air them over here as soon as they become available.  By doing this, they are actually disconnected buyers from sellers because nobody know when and where PS3 will be available.  One the supply becomes stable and blue ray starts picking up.  You will probably see a big increase in sales.  I think PS3 just have too much ammunitons and will out done xbox 360 in the end.
Posted by Joethemaniac32 on January 9,2007 at 11:23 AM
so right someone who finally got a wii.  it doesn't even matter.  if you want the xbox, buy the xbox, if you want the wii, then buy the wii, if you want the PS3, buy the PS3.  End of story.  lol.  i love comment boards...

Sorry about the spelling "Hi", my bad.  I don't play games just cause the gra"PH"ics look great but also for the content. If the content of the games sucks then why should I get the system. That is how I personally justify choosing a system.  But whatever if you feel that the graphics is what only matters then go ahead and go get the PS3, but it is 3 times the cost and very hard to get in almost all markets currently.

have fun Hi. and bye for now
Posted by Hi on January 3,2007 at 2:40 PM
Mana boy, "grafics" is spelled with a ph..."graphics".  However, you may be talking about the Wii's grafics, as not actual graphics, being utterly subpar to the PS3.  Oh wait, those are the Gamecube's graphics, sorry.
Posted by Mana_Sword on January 3,2007 at 11:16 AM
alright people, and I use the term loosely. I just read through all of your comments on the systems and if people are going to comment on something or post links then comment on something right. The Nintendo Wii was sold out in almost all markets except where Smithy lives. I myself work in retail and sell video game systems and you know what, I could have sold at least 100-200 Nintendo Wii's if there was any stock where I live. And another thing about the Nintendo controllers being recalled, It was not the controller, it was the STRAP cause people were using the controllers as whips litteritly. The only reason Nintendo is replacing the straps is to keep public face, and not because they are afraid of lawsuits. there is enough warnings on the box and in the manuals that say to have the strap on your wrist and properly tightened.

and for which console I am getting, I  am waiting to see which one has the most faults in the coming weeks and which one has the best games. (that does not mean the best grafics, but the best content). That is what really matters.

Posted by SevenFish on January 3,2007 at 9:49 AM
I agree with Haligonian, if you like the 360 and it meets your price level and gaming needs, then buy it and enjoy it.  If you can spend the $$$ for a PS3 then go buy one when you find one, and enjoy it too.  Who cares who sells more or who doesn't.  How about in 3 years we look at the figures and then make a nice statement "The 360 sold 6% more than the PS3 over a 3 year period" then everyone can jump up and down like idiots and then we can all go and sit down and play our systems in peace because that is what they are for...playing, not debating.  I feel like we've entered some stupid PC v. Mac debate.
Posted by Haligonian on January 2,2007 at 7:07 PM
I dont understand why people are so Ford Chevy with the PS3. Don't be stupid and miss an amazing system that you can actually buy and have an online environment that actually does something. As far as I can see the PS3 will be a good buy in 2 years but why wait? Get on Live and I'll kick your ass in Gears or Forza.
Posted by Smithy on January 2,2007 at 4:30 PM
Scott said: "This is only for the US where the xbox barely outsold the Wii. Worldwide, Nintendo sold almost twice as many Wii's as the xbox."

Nonsense.
Over the Christmas holiday period of November and December, the 360 far outsold the Wii in Britain and the rest of Europe.
The Wii was not even released for the whole of the Christmas shopping in Europe in November, leaving the 360 to clean up in November, and when the sales figures are in, you are gonna find that the 360 outsold the Wii in Europe in December too.
But hey, you can continue living in Nintendo dreamland.

Blahger said: "Keyword is SHIPPED, not sold"

Rubbish!!
The key word being SOLD, not shipped.
NPD does not do shipped.
NPD does actuall retail SALES, dummy.
As for the Wii not being available, I came across Wii's lots of times in plenty of shops during my Christmas shopping, not to mention Nintendo having an extra full year extra to get their supplies right then Microsoft did for the 360.
We haven't even mentioned the fact the the ii is nowhere near bleeding edge, being as it were, a mere souped up Gamecube.
No excuses for the Wii being beaten fair and square by the Microsoft xbox 360.
Posted by Wayde on January 2,2007 at 4:18 PM
I think it's interesting. The numbers are what they are, sure there are always factors to explain it.

Hauser, I don't think the purpose of the article was to say that Xbox360 is the superior game system. They're just numbers, believe it or not.
Posted by Jared on January 2,2007 at 3:38 PM
I own all three systems currently and am involved in market research for a large research firm and each system is great in their own regards.  I don't look at these 3 systems as a competition because they all over something a little bit different for the price...but if we much project - Let's be honest, the PS3 is the heavyweight in this competition, and once there 1080p game library expands, along with firmware upgrades, etc. etc. get worked out it will be THE system to have and play.  So if you like the system and the games, then go buy one and play it and enjoy it and let XBOX and Wii people play theirs.  The Wii is the lightweight here and once its novelty wears off, it may face some stiff sales competition vs. the 360 and PS3.  Hopefully once it's library develops it can continue to entice the casual gamer looking for a new kind of gameplay.  So if you like playing the Wii, go and play it and enjoy it and let 360 and PS3 owners play theirs.  The 360 comes in as the middleweight here and it will be interesting to see if it can outsell the PS3 in the longrun (3-5 years).  While it lacks PS3 heavyweight status with included Blu-ray, wifi, larger HD, sixaxis controllers, etc. etc., however it's PRICE, game library, xboxlive, and above average graphics give it quite an advantage about the Wii and PS3 for the someone who loves games but doesn't want to break their bank.

My prediction based on games systems from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony:

Wii marks huge sales through 2007, then drops off through 2008 through 2010 when novelty runs dry and consumers recognize the full media center benefits and superior gameplay on HDTV with the 360 and PS3.

360 continues with large sales through 2007 then dips slightly through 2008-2009-2010.

PS3 sales ride low through 2007, until Sony realizes they have to drop the price or die.  Once they drop the price by $100 or so, they'll sell like hotcakes through 2008-2010.  Look at the PS2 history, they have been selling those things forever...
Posted by Justin on January 2,2007 at 3:24 PM
Well, I'd like to highlight some various details of this report:
1. We're highlighting how many units were shipped, not sold
2. The XBOX 360 is being portrayed in a non-objective manner: it was bing shipped from the beginning of November until the end of December, whereas the Wii and PS3 were being shipped 3 weeks less than the XBOX 360
3. We're not studying sales, we're studying production.  You can only make a very little inference (and even so it has a high chance of being unreliable) on sales from production

I have a XBOX 360, and I see the 'yellow' journalistic twist on this story.

This article = fail.
Posted by Max Newman on January 2,2007 at 3:22 PM
Microsoft doesn't publish or seem to track actual sales they only publish shipping numbers. It looks like they are actually comparing xbox units shipped to Nintendo and Sony units sold. They are also using a two week longer periond for Microsoft.

I also saw more xbox 360 advertisement before the holidays on TV than I did for Sony or Nintendo.

I just don't see any of these system being a loser this time around.
Posted by Billytech on January 2,2007 at 1:38 PM
I have to agree with Haligonian - 100%
I have a 360, My PC has Mediacenter, and that combination absolutely ROCKS!
To pause a game of Gears, to Hit record on my Xbox360 to record a favorite
TV show, and then resume playing is just so cool. Watching the recorded or live TV show on your 360 whenever you want, IM your friends, It CLEARLY operates with your Ipod or Zune. Add to that the library AND the games coming out this year and this system simply blows all others away. My brother got his new PS3 and care to guess what he's playing? Look for him on Live, Gears of war and Halo2 !
Care to surf the web on your 360? try this http://www.gamersreports.com/news/1293/

Wii is built for 10-year-olds? Dude, grow up...

Shipped vs. sold is completely different. Wiis were not available in many places. In the end, it doesn't really matter, but if you're going to do a story like this, at least put it into context.
Posted by specialk on January 2,2007 at 12:30 PM
Does it matter who sold more of what? No, it's obvious the PS3 was the biggest console flop in history, and the Wii had great numbers, they sold a lot but where i am from the shelves were packed full of them but not a lot of people wanted a console build for 10 year olds (also the lack of HD) and can we all remember www.wiihaveaproblem.com and Wii's recall of 3.2 million controlers.  Xbox 360 is overall the best, great games, sweet graphics, new upgrade to support 1080p, and terrific online features (gaming, downloads, and the new movies/tv shows).  Easily enough said, there is a reason the 360 sold more.
Posted by Hauser on January 2,2007 at 12:26 PM
I'm not saying you are being paid by them.

I'm just saying that you must really, really like them.
Posted by Brando on January 2,2007 at 12:20 PM
Yes Hauser,

I'm being paid by Microsoft.  Or, maybe I think they need the business.  Lord knows they're doing terribly right now, what with that new Vista operating system no one will ever use...<heavy, heavy, heavy sarcasm>

This is a mere report of numbers we discovered in our many web surfing ventures.  We didn't create them, but we certainly found them interesting.  And so we passed them on to you all.

Enjoy!

Posted by Hauser on January 2,2007 at 12:05 PM
This is not a discussion on which console is better.  This is a response to an article which is written with the intentional manipulation of words, so as to accomplish an agenda.  In fact, every article posted by the same user is praising Microsoft.  I'm not buying it - the article or the 360.

I repeat: what's going on here?

Check out TVersity media server - it's free and it extends the Xbox 360 media playing abilities onto the internet and allows you to use streaming media and media feeds. PS3 and Wii users wish they could have that kind of functionality.

The 360 kicks serious butt and it's getting better with every Live update. Haligonian is right - Live Marketplace is awesome, there's something there for everyone, it's not just for gaming content. I enjoy renting movies and watching TV shows on Live, in HD of course. I'm still playing Oblivion after several months because additiional quests become available every month or so. MS did an excellent job with the 360 and any naysayers obviously haven't played with a 360.

This is only for the US where the xbox barely outsold the Wii. Worldwide, Nintendo sold almost twice as many Wii's as the xbox.

You are leaving out the most important factor: those are just units shipped to stores, not units sold.  While the Wii and PS3 are completely sold out, there are literally mountains of unsold 360s at Best Buy and many other stores, go check for yourself.  The reason for such a high number of shipped 360s is the fact that Microsoft "stuffed" the retail channel with consoles, forcing retailers to purchase large allotments.  Google it if you don't believe me.  Not to mention the fact that Wii and PS3 launched halfway through November.  In light of this the Wii can be seen as the obvious "winner", having sold through the most systems.

The 360 isn't really doing that good, it hasn't sold through that many units worldwide, wasting it's head start, and many units that have been purchased are replacement ones for broken consoles.  The 360 has the largest failure rate of any console in recent history, and to make matters worse they fail after a short period of time.  At least the PS2 took a couple of years to break.  I can't help but wonder if this is intentional on Microsoft's part, to create the illusion of higher sales.  The same tactic worked with Sony and the PS2.  Just ask Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, among other games.

You can't buy a Wii in America at a store, you have to risk sending $600 to a stranger who might not send you anything to even dream of touching a Wii.

If they were here, people would buy them.  They're not so people have to buy the XBOX.  Since Nintendo cares more about other markets, they will lose this entire country.  Microsoft will do the normal thing to the Wii and steal the technology, and release Wii remotes for XBOX.

By the time 2009 rolls around and Nintendo starts to ship Wii's to America, it will be too late.  Plus the 360 has a High-Def DVD player.  Since something is better then nothing, and the Wii won't be in America for a few more years, why wouldn't the XBOX outsell it?

The point of the report is that a system that has received only a small portion of Christmas hype compared to the releases from Nintendo and Sony has managed to outsell the Wii and PS3.  Beyond that, the Wii, although certainly not as available as the Xbox 360, could be found.  As Christmas approached, I know the local stores near me certainly had more on hand.  The same even became true for the PlayStation 3, as many consumers seemed to become frustrated and no longer actively pursued the system.

Of course, availability makes a difference, and we've admitted that.  Calm yourselves.  But, it's pretty significant that the Xbox 360 - which received very little media attention compared to the Wii or PS3 - posted such impressive sales numbers.

This article has no basis in reality.  You cannot compare sales of items where one item is in full supply everywhere and the other is sold out.  Hello?!

Keyword is SHIPPED, not sold.  Everywhere you went between Nov. and Christmas Wiis and PS3 were sold out while the were huge displays of nearly 30-40 360s (at least at the best buys I went to) that looked like they sold maybe 3 or 4 out of the square stack.

Patrick's absolutely right.  And given this was one of the first links on Google news...what's going on here?  Who's agenda is Haligonian pushing?  We've all seen this thing for a year...

Oh yeah - $399 Canadian too!

I just got a 360 and I'm blown away. XBOX LIVE is the only reason to play anything. If it's not Live I don't even bother with it. The XBOX has changed my view on video games and the 360 video marketplace and media centre stuff is exactly what i wanted for the living room - no more burning cd's or dvd's for me!!! All of my songs from the PC like nothing!! It's crazy - and I can even message my friends from work through xbox.com. They are playing Gears and I send an email which they get on the screen at home. Awesome! It makes organizing a game so much easier!

10 out of 10 for XBOX. BTW I got the Pro system, Gears, Rainbow, Ghost Recon and Arcade + wireless controller/headset for $399. Oh yeah! EB Games baby!

It is simply a matter of time as the Wii builds up a diverse library of titles.  It offers much more than the other two systems in the way of entertainment, and you don't need a second mortgage to get one.

Damn, there is some sneaky manipulation of the numbers going on here -- both the Wii and PS3 launched mid-November, more than halfway through the month.  The numbers being compared are for the entire november / december period.

The comparison basically short-changes the Wii and PS3 by giving the 360 an extra two-weeks worth of sales.  (this is a 33% longer sales interval -- statistically huge)

I would like to see an apples-to-apples comparison.

Yeah, but the xbox has also been out for a year.  So outselling other consoles a year after it's release is something worthy of something, right.

silly to compare the wii sales to XBox 360 for this time period.  at least project the wii numbers given greater availability.  so the wii was short by 10%?  big deal.
Posted by buffaloyoung on January 2,2007 at 10:11 AM
Could this not also be a result of the limited availability of the Wii?  The thing is sold out everywhere as well.  While it may have only sold 1.8 million, you still cannot find one anywhere in my state.
