Will Blu-ray do Porn?

This could be the deciding factor in the next generation DVD format war – what is Sony thinking? According to Digital Playground (an adult film production company) Sony is blocking the production of pornography on its Blu-ray format.

This is exactly how Sony lost the last great video format war between Beta and VHS. Regardless of how you feel about pornography, it’s critical for the success of a video format. The founder of Digital Playgrounds was interviewed at the 2007 AVN awards in Las Vegas and said he is now forced to use HD DVD. Digital Playgrounds said no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his company's discs because Sony threatened to take away the license of any manufacturer making Blu-ray porn. Sony’s moral high ground could cost it the war in the end.

There is a longstanding truism that many technologies are stimulated by porn. If it holds true in the next generation DVD formats, we might have just nailed our winner – HD DVD. Rendering porn impotent on Blu-ray will only ensure further penetration of HD DVD. But Sony should know better! Going limp on porn is exactly what lost Sony the Beta / VHS format war. After Beta banned porn, far more interest was aroused in the VHS format back in the early 80s.

Thank God I bought HD DVD.  Well, the almighty might actually side with (apparently right wing, conservative) Sony & Blu-ray on that one.

Can't you just get porn the old fashioned way, from the internets?

If I wanted to say naked people having sex I'd go back to my mom's house. I hope we've evolved since then. I think GizmoCafe is trying to promote porn with this article. Shame on you!

As if Blu-ray's denial of naked ladies wasn't enough, now HD DVD has an advantage in storage capacity, too.

blah Blah blah ... if anyone needs to see porn in Hi-def, might as well skip the HD/BR disc rez and go LIVE!!! Strip club anyone?  hahaha ...

No, but really.  It's a large market, the adult entertainment industry, and I don't condone Sony for holding "strong family values and morals" by not jumping on this lucrative endeavor.  It's just as well.  Ppl will be burning downloads onto the discs anyway when the burners are avail to the general public at reasonable costs - we'll say in about a year and change.

T-Bone. After reading a bit more it seems like the Blu-Ray folks need to start getting their message straight. Joone must have been given the cold shoulder from someone to have flip flopped like that. I suspect that management decisions are being made differently at different levels over at Sony.
I guess we'll have to wait and see to know for sure.
