A week or two ago, fellow Gizmo blogger Wayde reported on rumors that high definition disc format Blu-ray was never going to receive pornographic movies. At the time, this seemed to be the official wishes of Sony, Blu-ray backer, but in the wild hubbub that followed the news it’s now looking as if the format will see the return of Debbie, 1970s porn character extraordinaire.
History. If there’s one reason for Blu-ray to include pornographic films in its library, it’s for this very reason. Back in the 1980s, when VHS and Betamax dueled it out over movie lovers' wallets, the former won out when Beta turned its nose up at porn. Anyone following the HD DVD and Blu-ray battle knows that the present war has much in common with the format fight of 20 years ago. If HD DVD were to become the sole recipient of pornography, it could spell the end of Blu-ray.
Well, along comes Debbie. Yesterday, it was officially announced that popular porn producers Vivid Entertainment will be bringing “Debbie Does Dallas…Again” to Blu-ray. Set for release March 28 for about $39.95, Debbie’s return means there will be no “moral high ground” taken in this latest tech tango.
