Sony PSP Firmware 3.10 Released, Cracked

In the world of handheld gaming, the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, is a distant second in a two-man race.  Despite its sleek design, giant screen, and nigh-PS2 capable graphics, the PSP lags behind Nintendo’s DS because it simply hasn’t received the marketing or developer support of its competition.  In addition, the PSP is a hacker’s dream, keeping dollars out of Sony’s pocket.  Although the company recently attempted to prevent further hacking of its product through another firmware update, it has already been cracked.

Sony’s firmware 3.10 upgrade was developed to patch loopholes allowing hackers the ability to upload homebrew games.  Some of its tertiary benefits include expanded support for PlayStation Network titles, support for MPEG-4 AVC, and dynamic normalizer sound.  Unfortunately, for the legion of PSP crackers out there, the firmware is certainly not worth the door being slammed shut on unlicensed homebrew fun.

Good thing, then, that homebrew expert hacker “Dark Alex” has already split 3.10.  The mysterious character, loved by all PSP scammers, has been offering his own firmware editions that provide everything Sony can plus other, shadier goodies.  Some of his previous upgrades include the ability to overclock one’s system and full-resolution video.

Where’s the good news for Sony?  Maybe Bill Gates will slip on some ice.

Why does Sony bother? When the media get the chance to talk to someone like Phil Harrison as someone did at the recent D.I.C.E event, why not ask Phil that question on the reason Sony keeps trying to block sercurity holes? Sony could go all the way to firmware version 100.0 and eventually it will be cracked. These hackers aren't saying 'oh no, Sony has updated the firmware on the PSP, this means we'll have to try and crack it, what a boar' Not at all, they love the challenge and probably hope for an update just so they can see if they'll crack it. Another reason why security patches are pointless is because the only people the patch will be useful for are the gamers who aren't in the homebrew scene and will inevitably update the software. These patches are to stop the homebrew community which will only work if you update it. This is something the homebrew community will never do, they'll stay with their 1.5 ver. PSP's for ever.
