Blu-ray Earns Edge at 2007 Oscars

High definition home theaters with Blu-ray disc capacity have a slight edge viewing the winners of the 2007 Oscars. The high definition disc format war continues to rage and both sides are looking for any edge possible. If Blu-ray disc association wants some more bragging rights, it's the only format that can present the big winners at the 2007 Oscars including the winners of Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Animated Feature Film.

The big winner last night was Martin Scorsese who finally ended his Oscar drought by winning two big ones – Best Director and Best Picture for his film The Departed. The Departed was at once a typical Scorsese gangland film, this time set in Irish neighborhoods in Boston. But The Departed also featured a star encrusted cast seldom seen in film these days. Although all the stars of The Departed put in great performances none of them received the Oscars for their individual efforts. The Departed is a Warner film so it's available on both HD DVD and Blu-ray and happens to be in stores now. This week will bring a boom in movie disc sales and rentals of key Oscar winning films.

Best Actor was won by Forest Whitaker for "The Last King of Scotland". Forrest plays the Idi Amin the former dictator of Uganda in this cautionary tale of idealism gone horribly wrong. The film will be distributed by Fox Searchlight, Fox is a Blu-ray only studio. Sorry HD DVD, no best actor yet.

The Oscar for Best Actress was taken home by Helen Mirren for her performance as Queen Elizabeth in "The Queen". Miramax is the owner of this film journey into royal narcissism. Miramax, owned by Disney exclusively releases high def discs for Blu-ray. 2007 Oscars deals yet another shameful burn to HD DVD.

Finally, the best Animated Feature Film was Happy Feet, the story of Emperor Penguins in the Antarctic. Featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman this child friendly comedy can be obtained on both high def formats compliments Warner.

Toshiba's HD DVD needs some good news soon! Being shut out of two of the top four Oscars is no small matter as movie disc sales are sure to boom in the weeks following the Oscar ceremony.

no difference Alissa - both formats will capture the F word some 200 odd times it's used just the same. They'll both look equally spectacular.

I'd watch The Departed in any format - great movie, Mark Wahlberg rules. Unfortunately, it's standard DVD for me, iso i'm probably missing some pretty great detail.

Which would it be "better" on I wonder, though - HD-DVD or Blu-ray?
