Total HD Blu-ray/HD-DVD Combo Set for June Release

Although Sony's Blu-ray is currently holding the high ground over competitor HD-DVD in the high definition movie disc war, the campaign is far from over.  HD-DVD still has Universal up its sleeve, while it's yet to be proven that the plethora of PlayStation 3 Blu-ray players will have a long-term effect on the next-gen HD landscape.

So, with each side still fiercely battling it out, there comes a peacemaker; it looks as if Warner's Total HD Blu-ray and HD-DVD combo format could be ready to hit the market by June.

Warner whipped up a mini-frenzy back at January's Consumer Electronics Show by revealing Total HD, a disc that would simply hold Blu-ray content on one side, with HD-DVD material on the other.  Warner has assured current owners of either player that the discs would be compatible.

The announced June ship date comes from the LA-hosted International Recording Media Association (IRMA) forum.  According to Warner, discs with lower storage capacity content (15GB HD-DVD, 25GB Blu-ray) should be shipping by the time Buffalo becomes inhabitable.

In addition, a disc featuring greater HD-DVD storage (30GB) will be ready two months later, in August.

No titles have yet been announced for Total HD, but I'm fairly certain it'll include overpriced 1980s classics like "Coming to America".
