The age of Sony exclusives may be in its twilight. Just a day after rumors revealed that the Ace Combat and Katamari Damacy franchises were on their way to Microsoft’s Xbox 360, this morning it’s becoming clear that Namco’s franchises are not alone. Capcom’s Devil May Cry 4, the popular third-person action/slasher, will also debut on Microsoft’s console as well as the PC.
The multiplatform release of the next Dante adventure will be the first to stray from a Sony console. In a recent press release, Capcom said the move was made so that Devil May Cry 4 could “take advantage of each platform’s hardware strengths,” and that, from a business point of view it will “help enhance profits.”
Is this the end of exclusives…or just those owned by Sony?
Although exclusive third party titles appear to be dwindling on Sony’s consoles – and have never really existed on Nintendo’s – there’s still strong evidence that the Xbox 360 will maintain resilient relationships with a group of companies not directly tied to Microsoft.
There’s been no indication that Bungie or Irrational Games will ever multiplatform release flagship titles Halo or Bioshock, in addition to the plethora of games with Microsoft’s name spread across the cover (Gears of War, Forza Motorsport, Crackdown, Mass Effect).
Devil May Cry 4’s move adds to a growing list already consisting of the aforementioned Ace Combat and Katamari, in addition to Grand Theft Auto IV, Fatal Inertia, Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War, and Assassin’s Creed.
