Black Microsoft Xbox 360 Features Further Revealed

Kotaku is regurgitating Game Informer details today regarding the long-rumored black Xbox 360.  According to the source, the new unit (codenamed "Zephyr") is indeed on its way, boasting a 120GB hard drive, HDMI port, and even HDMI cable.

Total cost?  $479.  Not too shabby, considering the expanded HDD space and the typical thievery done by most retail outlets when it comes to high definition A/V wires.

Kotaku’s still not impressed, however, complaining that the unit’s lack of internal HD-DVD support is lame.  According to Game Informer, a Microsoft source revealed the high definition playback drive is missing because the “format’s not proven.”  Speaking as an HD-DVD owner who follows the Blu-ray battle closely, that’s a fairly accurate depiction and good reason not to include such a drive.  Haven’t we learned enough from the PlayStation 3’s price point?

As for the validity of the black Xbox 360 in its current capacity, be assured we’ve heard from a number of retail resources that it is on the way this May.

Sounds about right. Microsoft knows packaging that HD *** won't help boost sales of the unit just because of two major marketing factors;

1. Peripherals
2. Padding the price

Plus, seeing how Sony put themselves behind the 8 ball with the Blu-ray player as OEM,  MS is smart not to following suit.
