Xbox 360's Gears of War Movie Rights Grabbed by New Line Cinema

Now that the Gears of War craze is calming down a bit, it's time Hollywood finally took notice.  With the game still extremely popular on Microsoft's Xbox Live service, New Line Cinema has reportedly purchased movie rights to the Epic Games title.  Producers and writers for the screen adaptation have already been set, as this gamer crosses his fingers that someone can actually out-do the original Mortal Kombat flick and make a halfway decent video game movie.

According to Variety magazine, the film is being written by Pirates of the Caribbean and Collateral author Stuart Beattie.  The Gears movie will be produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, with the latter serving as producer to some comparable action flicks (like Behind Enemy Lines and Aliens vs. Predator).

For those who've been living in a non-console cave for the last six months, Gears of War is the story of four futuristic recruits fighting an underground force known as the "Locust".  The third person action/shooter set a plateau for both next-gen gameplay and graphics when released in November, 2006.

As of today, Gears has shipped over three million copies.  Make a movie?  Duh.  However, with the Halo film stalled at this moment, it seems somewhere someone's priorities are simply not in order.

Don't miss Gears of War

I just hope they do the game justice.  I have not seen the Doom movie but heard it was not as great as it should have been.  I think the reviews of Doom kept me from watching it.  The reason I bring up Doom is because Gears of Wars would be in the same film genre.

Mortal Kombat was good though.  The sequel.... not so much.  Several main cast members did not even make a return.
