Everyone’s favorite right-wing lawyer Jack Thompson is at it again. This time the rather infamous anti-video game violence crusader is attacking Microsoft over its mega-anticipated Halo 3, set for release this September. Thompson is most “fired up” over the game’s “Mature” ESRB rating and the threat of sale to gamers under the age of 17. Bypassing the retailers, Thompson is now threatening to sue Microsoft unless it takes major steps to prevent kids from getting their hands on the “hyperviolent Microsoft Xbox 360 game Halo 3”.
Thompson’s rant has taken the form of a formal letter to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, with a copy forwarded to the media.
According to Thompson, the Federal Trade Commission, or FTC, has found that games deemed “Mature” by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) are “routinely sold to kids under the age of 17”. Although Thompson fails to cite his source (he rarely does), he alleges that the “most recent failure rate of the ratings on ‘Mature’ games, according to the FTC, is 42%.”
I’m not too sure what this statistic means, how Thompson arrives at it, or if the FTC has ever espoused such a number. As we saw in a television interview with Thompson after the Virginia Tech massacre, he’s often lost when it comes to providing evidence for his claims.
Like his assertion that the Virginia Tech killer honed his murderous skills playing PC favorite Counterstrike, Thompson now tells Microsoft (and subsequently, the media) that,
“As you also know, Lee Boyd Malvo trained on Microsoft’s Halo to further enable him to become the remarkably efficient ‘DC Beltway Sniper.’”
For those in the gaming world, it’s remarkably easy to recognize the difference between popping blue Covenant aliens with an Xbox controller and murdering civilians with an actual sniper rifle.
Despite a rather embarrassing appearance on “Hardball” and being halted from constant suits against Grand Theft Auto maker Take Two, Jack Thompson appears to be alive and well in his lifelong mission to annoy video gamers and those behind the medium.
Halo 3 ships September 25.
