Xbox 360 HDMI Cable; What the Format Doesn't Want you to Know

XCM is a manufacturer of aftermarket cables and cases that just announced it’s making an Xbox 360 HDMI cable. This will knock the wind out of Xbox 360 Elite or the so called “black” Xbox 360. Its primary advantage was HDMI.

Video-philes will look to the new HDMI capabilities for enhanced video quality over the component cable that comes with Xbox 360. But, you might want to hold on to your enthusiasm for the digital video standard.

It’s true that HDMI is a fully digital video connection standard that is not susceptible to degradation inherent in analogue connections such as component. But in the short run between your Xbox 360 and HDTV your component connection is unlikely suffering from any visible degradation. I’d be interested to see if anyone can produce A/B test results that demonstrated HDMI was superior to component over a 720P (or 1080i) HDTV. On paper, yes HDMI should be better. But in practical while you’re playing the game, I don’t think so.

However, the component/HDMI issue gets a little more complicated when your display is 1080P. I can already see confusion spreading all over the web that seems to be based on posts like this from TeamXbox: “XCM Brings 1080p HDMI to Standard Xbox 360”.

From a game POV you may be right...with all things being equal

- TV supports 1080P over component

- The game was created to support 1080P

Comparing HDMI against Component connections in short distances may have little to know difference in visual quality.

However - There are some important facts that you have left out.

- Many of today's TVs don't support 1080p over component

- Component connections do not support "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)" which would limit playback to a non-HD resolution

I just want the HDMI for DVD upscaling :-(

Still ticks me off that they can't do upscaling over component

other than that I am fine with component on my 1080p set.

The xbox supports 1080p through vga cables too. Though I don't have a vga cable yet I'm on component and it seems I have a lot of jaggies in game like there was no AA.

According to the source at http://www.xcm.cc/xcm_white_360_hdmi_1080i_cable.htm

XCM says this much touted cable only delivers 1080i through HDMI for the white X360, NOT 1080P, which is what many of us want.  And yes, there are MANY 360 games on the shelves labeled as delivering resolutions which include 1080p, contrary to what some blogs and posters have been saying.
