PS3 Price Drop - Emotion Engine Clear Out

The Sony PS3 price drop so far – Sony drops the cost of the 60 GB version of the PS3 by $100 just in time for E3 despite what it said earlier about not planning any price drops. That’s the good news. The bad news is the freshly cost cut PS3 60GB is being replaced by a new 80GB version. You’d think adding 20GB to the hard drive would be a good thing. But HDD space is cheap. Replacement drives that trivialize a 20GB gain are not hard to come by. The trouble with the new 80GB version of the PS3 is the report from CruchGear that it will discontinue stacking it with the Emotion Engine. That’s the chip that made the PS3 compatible with all those PS2 (and PS) games you’re still hanging on to.

Gamers in the UK are used to paying more and getting less when it comes to console games. They’ve been paying MSRP of £425 (or a street price of £398.97) with no Emotion Engine, ever and no price cut in sight for the UK either.

Is it any wonder why PS2 sales continue pummel rival Xbox 360 and Sony’s own PS3 six months into PS3’s product cycle.

I have to echo Vince’s sentiment from Crunch Gear – if you value playing your older PlayStation games on a PS3 run out and get a North American 60GB version quick.
