The Alpine iDA-X001 will play back Iphone. But you have to buy the alpine kce422i Ipod adaptor. It may not show the album art but you can control it and hear the audio just like a regular Ipod. We installed one in a customers car a week ago and it's been working fine. You will still have to turn on the air plane mode. But it does work.

Yeah--I absolutely agree with your rules to live by--especially with Alpine. I purchased the IVA-D300 when it first came out, only to find out that it still abided by redbook audio standards and would only see as many songs on the iPod as can fill the memory of a system typically used to read CDs that typically hold 15 songs. My library (slow to access) pretty much stopped on the letter E for the artists. I was very upset to find that I had paid top dollar just to be a guinea pig for Alpine. Of course, the IVA-D310 works. But I spent the $1800 on the IVA-D300. Never by first gen Alpine products. It goes past this--I purchased the Amp-Link, which was short lived. Very dissappointed with Alpine.

However, it is compatible with the iPhone, in case you were curious.

My iPhone works perfectly with my Alpine 9856 and Alpine iPod hi speed cable. I don't even have to turn on Airplane Mode. I just say no and it works perfectly. Navigation, sound, playlists, everything.

When a call comes in the music automatically pauses and when I hang up it starts right back up at the same spot.

Perfect.

I'll have to see what kind of adaptor Steve is using. I thought they'd largely be the same for the same head unit. If I can determine what model iPod adaptor Steve's using I'll msg it here in a comment.

Apple has just released version 1.0.1 software for the iPhone which fixes all compatibility issues with Alpine products. Therefore, all 2007 Alpine head units and MM stations are now iPhone compatible as long as the iPhone receives this update. Here is the link with instructions to load the software update onto the iPhone:

In addition, the iPhone will automatically prompt the user to update the software when connected to iTunes.

Below are the compatible head units:

-iDA-X001, CDE-9870, CDE-9873, CDE-9881, CDA-9883, CDA-9885, CDA-9887, IVA-W205, IVA-D105,

VPA-B222, DVA-9861.

-all 2006 head units and MM stations that are iPod full speed ready

-all units that use the KCA-420i iPod interface (IVA-D310 for example)
