I am still thinking that it will take a big mistake by Apple to have anyone make a dent in their market share.

nobody has really tried yet. the mp3 players by creative, sony and iRiver are just iPod clones offering no real alternative. It looks like microsoft is really going to give it a go.

But then, it's just an mp3 player, what can you really do with it. Attach a phone to it and your into a whole different market

Maybe the next new MP3 player that will blow away Apple, will literally have mechanical arms and legs, and do a dance for you on your desk, to keep you entertained while listening to your mp3 player at work. Ah? Ah ha! That would be a neat yet useless feature, hey?

Robotic iPod, now if it can pour beer, vaccume the room whilst keeping you entertained ... my gosh what an invention. They have robots that can do all of the above.

But Apple still has a loyal following and is considered by most to be a premium brand. It reminds me of how people used to always consider Sony products to be the best. I think for Microsoft to have a chance, then neeed new and better features and a lower price. (The song calloection trade idea is a great start

Premium Brand?! Stella is a premium brand, Versace is a premium brand. Just because a company can package what everyone else is doing, add features and charge double doesn't mean it's premium. The next mp3 player that might be considered the "ipod killer" might probably have proprietary media, wireless comm, 300GB storage, video, comes with it's own vallet that goes everywhere you do so you never have to touch a thing plus accepts voice, sms or email commands to play, stop or roll over. Goddamn! Apple, just come out with a two-way pager phone media player already.

As Dave mentioned, Apple loyalty is fierce, to say the least. I'm not sure there is anything Microsoft can really pull off at this stage in the game to garnish that kind of brand loyalty. However, I'm glad they're making a go of it. Market competition could help the consumer in the long run...lower prices and better features in products maybe.

I checked out the zune (and insider) sites and previews, but the best thing I came away with was finding the Zune site's singer Regina Spektor...

I'd take the new Creative Zen Vision W you blogged over the zune based on what I see so far.

Tony: Let's assume you're talking about iPod's dominance of the MP3 player market.

Today it seems unbeatable. But, how far the mighty have fallen out of the fickle consumer’s favor. I’m not saying it will happen, but I am saying that the iPod is suffering from severe overexposure these days. iThis and iThat. I can’t say for sure but I think Apple really jumped the shark on that iPod – Nike deal.
