It was recently revealed that the U.S. Copyright Office has OK’d the “unlocking” of cell phones and the use of game emulators. Although they’re very different cracks, each had been previously considered illegal.

Given this article's been dugg, I think it's fair to point out that the statement "the current king of illegal file-sharing protocols" seems to imply that AllOfMP3 is, in fact, illegal in the country in which it is based. Which, at the current time, it is not.

If allofmp3.com is shut down at some point, their customers, who enjoyed DRM-free and fair priced music, won't go to iTunes or anywhere else where they are forced to buy DRM-plagued crap. I for one would rather go back to P2P before I buy anything with DRM on it.

Let us not forget that music piracy isn't the only piracy prevalent in Russia. Software and movie piracy is rampant. There's a section of the major Moscow electronics market, Gorbushkin Dvor, which is dedicated to real, physical discs of movies (~$5-7) often before they'd be out on DVD in the US (I was there in June and could have bought "Lyudie X Tri" or "X-Men Three"), CDs (~$3-5), and software. Software prices range heavily, from $5 for the cheap stuff to $12-15 for something like Adobe Creative Suite 2. Of course, you can only pay in Russian Rubles to avoid falling afoul of the law.
Basically what I'm trying to say is killing Allofmp3 is futile, partially because it is often more expensive than buying a real CD from a vendor in your local metro station (in a booth, licensed by the city), and partially because there are worse offenders.

Corrected and thank you. AllofMp3 has nothing to do with file sharing, but the facts in the story remain correct and verifyable.

Whether or not allofMP3 constitutes piracy is a grey area, I personally would not call it piracy. It's just using global commerce the way it meant to be used.

So, digg it man!

if it is legal to manufacture goods internationally to skirt pesky labor laws and organized unions, then shouldn't it also be legal to distribute data internationally to avoid pesky copyright laws?
