The Samsung SCH-i830 Handheld Device

Samsung SCH-i830

Feature Rich Pocket PC Phone with Full QWERTY Keyboard

The beauty of devices like Samsung’s SCH-i830 can also serve as a source of frustration. As a cutting edge convergent device, the SCH-i830's mix of functionality makes it impossible to categorize. The SCH-i830’s defiance of our human need to impose Aristotelian order to such a device makes it as much a challenge to add to a linear website as it must have been for Samsung to design. It’s a cell phone, a Pocket PC, a media player and a PDA!

The Pocket PC uses Windows Mobile 2003; the media player not only uses Windows Mobile Media Player and its complete suite of PlaysForSure DRM compatible media files, but integrated MP3 / WMA / WMV audio player with integrated MP3 and 65K 16 bit color 240x320 pixel TFT screen; and the PDA comes equipped with a mini QWERTY keyboard that slides out from under its case for enhanced control. As a Pocket PC, the SCH-i830 is really just a variant of its predecessor the SCH-i730.

The SCH-i830 is also a full quad-band phone with both GSM and CDMA. The SCH-i830 is compatible with CDMA 850 / 1900 / GSM 900 / 1800 networks, which allows for comprehensive global roaming. The built-in voice dialing and speaker phone capabilities complete the cell phone feature list on the SCH-i830.

The new Samsung handheld also supports Pop3, IMAP4 and SMTP mail clients. With your Windows Mobile OS you can add Pocket Outlook mail viewer and instant text messaging. It also has full IR control so you can program your handheld to be your household Universal remote. The PDA device is loaded with features like full integrated browsing using the Piscel browser/file viewer, a full calendar scheduler with a to-do list and voice memo. Its’ memory card compatibility includes SD, MMC and SDIO with built in 128 MB. The Li-Ion battery is rated for 2.20 hours of talking with 130 hours of standby.

There is very little you can’t do with this handheld device. Verizon Wireless has the exclusive rights on this Smartphone in North America, bringing sophisticated quality that is sure to give the Treo’s domination in this market a run for its money. The question, however, is how to effectively market these supremely flexible, multi-functional devices.
