How to Restore your iPod on a Mac

A step-by-step guide to performing the restore operation on your Mac

This operation is intended for the regular iPod: that's the device with a hard drive. Some iPod models may require that you disconnect the iPod from your Mac during the operation. You'll have to connect the iPod to the AC power adapter included with the device. Second gen iPod Mini and Nano won't need the AC power adapter during this process.

This guide will cover restoring the iPod on a Mac only, not a PC. Click here to learn about restoring the iPod on a PC.

iPod Restore and update on Mac

Warning: This operation will wipe out your iPod's hard drive. The only way to get your library back onto the iPod will be from saved files on your computer. So, if you haven't backed up, this is where you should start.

First, we'll obtain and install the latest version of the iPod Updater. You can obtain iPod Updater's latest version here.

Next, we'll erase your iPod. This step, which occurs before the actual restore operation, will ensure the cleanest restore possible. You should make sure you perform this step if you're selling your iPod. The RIAA doesn't like it if you sell an iPod with music included.

  • Use the OSX Disk Utility, which can be found in Applications - Utilities Folder
  • Select the iPod in your Disk Utility and select Repair
  • You'll need to select the Erase button to delete all files on the iPod's hard drive

Now, you're ready for the Updater to restore your iPod.

  • When an iPod with a wiped HDD is connected to your computer, the iPod may automatically prompt you to install the update. Inside the iPod Updater select Restore
  • At this point an admin password might be necessary to install to get the Restore rolling
  • A progress indicator will demonstrate the progress of the Restore operation
  • Once the Restore operation is finished look at the screen. If you don't see a progress indicator beneath the Apple Logo you need to do one of two things:
    • You may see the power outlet icon on the iPod. If so, disconnect the iPod from your computer and plug it into the wall using the wall adaptor included with your iPod
    • If you had to use Disc Mode for any reason, you'll see the "OK to Disconnect" message. Now disconnect and reset [Reset the iPod] the iPod

Now that the restore is complete your iPod has been restored to the factory defaults; however, iTunes will want to synchronize at this point. If iTunes isn't setup to automatically synch you should run the iTunes Setup Assistant, which will allow you to name the iPod. Setup your synch preferences and let it synch.

Now that the iPod is synched with iTunes, you have successfully restored all your music and playlists. Congratulations!

Now enjoy the music.
