Here’s the situation: you bought an HDTV in the last year or so and, due to either cost constraints, timing or dumb luck you’re in the majority of HDTV owners with a native resolution of 720p instead of 1080p.

You own an Xbox 360 and love it, but HD DVD curiosity has you shaking with frantic anxiety. Now that Microsoft has released the HD DVD add-on, do you go for it? Or, opt for the least expensive HD DVD player on the market, Toshiba’s HDA1?

I tested both units in a head-to-head dual to be my next player. Two HD DVD players entered my home theater, and one would face a humiliating exit.
