HDTV DVR Combo

Korea’s Second Place TV Manufacturer Eyes Top Spot in Plasma

LG’s Plasma/DVR combo televisions have been a tremendous success. In 2005, the convenience oriented plasma/DVRs comprised half of all LG’s plasma television sales. In an effort to see if lightning will strike twice, LG has decided to expand this line and add a few improvements.

In February, 2006, at the Hilton in Seoul, South Korea, LG showcased a complete line of flat panel LCD and plasma HDTV’s that feature built-in DVR.

At the event, executive Vice President and CEO of LG, Sang Han Yoon was quoted as stating: "Today's TV viewers already have too many choices in high-resolution widescreen TVs. LG provides differentiated products focusing on the 'viewer's experience. LG's flat panel TV with a built-in DVR provides viewers with a seamless viewing experience and greater control by allowing them to watch whatever they want, whenever they want.'" LG has included several features in the design of the Plasma/DVR Combo television that are sure to enhance the viewer's experience.

Plasma/DVR Combo Features:

  • Build in HD-DVR (250GB)
  • ATSC/NTSC/QAM Clear Tuners
  • CableCARD compatible
  • On Screen TV Guide
  • 9-in-2 Multi Memory Card Reader
  • LG’s Exclusive XD Engine
  • HDMI inputs for HDCP
  • IEEE 1392 (firewire)
  • 5000:1 Contrast Ratio
  • 1366x768P Resolution

Unlike the established Plasma / DVR combos, the new line from LG will come in both LCD and Plasma. LCD panels will come in 37", 42" and 47" sizes, while plasma will be available in 42" or 50". The DVR capacity has been bumped up to a full 250GB, that’s enough for 21 hours of HDTV content. This new higher capacity is a significant jump from current models LG demonstrated at CES ’06, which had 160 GB drives. The DVR controls will include commercial skipping, and ultra-quick rewind and fast-forward. The new TV/DVRs will have some extra goodies, but not 1080P.

One of the new convenience features will be the 9-in-2, multi-format memory card reader. This versatile reader will let you view digital photos and MP3s. You can even transfer your digital media to the TVs hard drive so you can store digital music and images. The 9-in-2 will read the following memory cards: CF/MD/SD/SMC/MMC/MS/MS Pro/MS Pro Duo/xD.

LG, formerly known as Goldstar, has really broken out of the economical mold in the last 20 years. It’s ironic that the name was once almost synonymous with cheap 19" TV/VHS combos. LG's new products will certainly help define them as a cutting-edge electronics provider.
