The Samsung 82" LCD Television

Samsung Takes Largest LCD Crown from Sharp
In October, 2005, Sharp announced its intention to release the world’s largest LCD television. The Japanese manufacturer set an impressive precedent with a 65" display for the Sharp Aquos LCD TV. However, refusing to concede defeat, South Korean manufacturer Samsung surpassed the 65" marker by developing an 82" monster. Samsung’s 82" thin film transistor liquid crystal display may take some time for any consumer electronics manufacturer to surmount. If a larger display is to be developed, it is probably safe to assume that Sharp or LG will be the manufacturer.
Samsung president Kim Sang-Soo was quoted as saying the following regarding his company’s accomplishment: "Our 82 inch model proves Samsung’s technological leadership. The development of the 82-inch model broke the generally accepted notion that an LCD screen has a 40 inch size limit…."
The massive LCD panel is cut from a single 1,870 millimeter x 2200 millimeter glass substrate. The sheet of LCD material is manufactured at Samsung’s LCD plant in Tangjong, South Korea. The whole substrate from which the 82" LCD panel is cut is 97 inches. This has led some people to speculate that a 97" model might be on horizon. The only information available regarding the release of Samsung’s 82" monster is that it will be available on the market in 2007. This new TV will be full HD 1080P with 1920 x 1080 pixels. An approximate price has yet to be announced.
Samsung is a world leader in LCD technology and is the world’s largest manufacturer of LCD panels. The research by Samsung into perfecting its craft is second to none. The first quarter of 2006 was a breakthrough year for the Korean manufacturer. They’ve revolutionized the DLP display with their new LED DLP models. In Q1 of 2006, Samsung announced a 40% increase in profits due in large part to the demand for its progressive display devices.
